  • WHAT IS A DIRECT CREMATION?

A direct cremation is a type of funeral service where the body is cremated in the days immediately following the death, without a formal funeral or memorial service beforehand. This process typically involves the following steps:

    1. Transfer of the Deceased: The body is transported from the place of death directly to the crematorium.
    2. Handling Formalities: Necessary paperwork and permits are completed to authorize the cremation.
    3. Cremation Process: The body is cremated in a simple container rather than an expensive casket.
    4. Return of Ashes: The ashes are returned to the family in a basic urn or another chosen container.

Direct cremation is often chosen because it is the most straightforward and cost-effective option. It allows families to arrange a memorial service at a later date if they wish, separate from the cremation, giving them flexibility to honor the deceased in a personalized way, possibly in a more intimate or meaningful setting without the immediate logistical pressures.

Pricing & Fees

  • WHY FLAT-FEE PRICING?

Birdsong Cremations adopts a flat-fee pricing model to ensure transparency and eliminate the hidden costs that are often associated with traditional funeral homes. This approach to pricing includes several key services within a single, clear cost. Here’s what the flat-fee typically covers:

Basic Funeral Director & Staff Services:

    • Professional services to guide and assist you through the cremation process.

    Transfer of Deceased:

    • Safe and dignified transportation of your loved one from their place of death to the cremation facility, covering up to a weight limit of 250 lbs. If over 250 lbs a fee could apply.

    Refrigeration:

    • This includes keeping the deceased refrigerated for up to five days if necessary before the cremation.

    Crematory Fee:

    • The cost associated with the actual cremation process, covering up to a certain weight limit.

    Alternative Container and Temporary Urn:

    • Provision of a suitable container for the cremation and a temporary urn for the ashes.

Additional fees are only applicable for optional extras, allowing you to customize the service according to your needs. This could include requests for additional urns or an ID viewing. This pricing structure is designed to be straightforward and customer-friendly, providing families with clear options without the worry of unexpected expenses.

  • WHAT IS THE METHOD OF PAYMENT?

The method of payment accepted by Birdsong Cremations includes all major credit cards. They accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express for their services. • HOW DOES THE COST OF DIRECT CREMATION COMPARE TO A TRADITIONAL FUNERAL?

Direct cremation, often referred to as simple cremation, is typically much more affordable than a traditional funeral, generally costing around one-fifth of what a conventional funeral might cost. This significant difference in cost is largely due to the absence of several expenses typically associated with traditional funerals. In a direct cremation:

No Need for Permanent Memorial or Burial Fees:

    • These costs, which can be substantial in traditional funerals, are not a necessity in cremation, though families have the option to include them if they wish.

    Flexibility in Service Choices:

    • Families can decide the extent of services they prefer with cremation, which can range from very minimal to more comprehensive arrangements. This flexibility allows for control over costs, depending on each family's preferences and budget.

The affordability and customizable nature of direct cremation make it a preferred choice for many who seek a simpler, more cost-effective alternative to traditional funeral services.

  • WHAT EXPENSES ARE ASSOCIATED WITH CREMATION?

The costs associated with cremation can differ based on location and the selection of services. Birdsong's basic direct cremation service surpasses all local and state requirements. The main costs include transportation of the deceased into our care, the cremation process itself, and the service fees for the team assisting the family and handling necessary documentation and permits. Additional costs may arise from government-related fees like those for the medical examiner, permits, and death certificates. Other optional costs could relate to services chosen by the family, urn selection, and permanent memorials such as columbarium or gravesite placements.
